COMMUNITY FORUM

Boycott will backfire

To the Editors:

I have recently read the variety of reactions to the Southern Baptist boycott of Disney Co. for, among other grievances, "promoting" the gay lifestyle. After getting past my reactions of amusement, intimidation, outright anger and shock, depending on what I am reading, I feel obligated to point out two things to every gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered person I can. Two reasons to have hope.

First, I work in sales for a gay and lesbian business, calling potential clients. Prior to the Southern Baptists' announcement, I'd faced far too many homophobic reactions to hope for much progress in g/l/b/t-straight relations in this area. Since then, I have spoken with many in the business community who are angered by the boycott. Basically, I've received many “How dare they try to dictate to any business how to run that business" reactions.

Second, numbers are on our side. Every story I read stated there are roughly 15 million Southern Baptists in this country. Using the accepted number of 10 percent of all people are non-heterosexual, there are roughly 26 million of us. If you were Michael Eisner and the Disney board, who do you listen to?

Remember, money talks, bullshit walks. No matter how slow, progress in the g/l/b/t rights movement is being made.
